FEES vs. MBSS

Both FEES and MBSS are considered the Gold Standard for instrumental assessment of swallowing. Both tests provide valuable information to make appropriate recommendations for our patients. In the setting of Long-Term Care facilities, FEES may have benefits over MBSS.

Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES):

Procedure can be completed right at the patient's bedside; there is no need to transport patients outside of your facility
No exposure to radiation
No need for use of barium; patients can eat and drink everyday food items and their favorite drinks
FEES can be used on medically complex patients, including those on trach/vent
FEES can be more cost effective than MBSS

Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS):

Patient must be transported to radiology suite, mobile radiology van, or outside facility for completion of assessment
Patient is exposed to radiation
MBSS is time-limited due to radiation exposure
Patient must consume barium for completion of test which can be unpleasant and even cause constipation
